Alternatives to flossing for better health

Traditional forms of oral hygiene have always included tooth brushing and flossing. Use of ancillary oral rinses augment this regimen of good oral health. Recent research notes the role of oral inflammation not only on periodontal disease but also on basic health. Inflammation of the gum tissue has been linked to pancreatic cancer, heart disease, diabetes, stroke and premature birth. Oral health can be compromised when oral surgery is performed that limits ones ability to maintain proper cleaning regimens . Patients who have had their jaws broken and need to be wired shut, pain from surgery, chronic oral sores, orthodontic appliances etc. can limit ones ability to maintain good health.

One tool that I would like to recommend as an adjunct to oral health in any situation but as an aid for post surgery patients is the us of the dental water jet. Various brand names are available. Research indicates that a water jet can be even more effective in reducing gum disease than flossing. The dental water jet is recommended for individuals who can't or won't floss. The dental water jet will provide a significant decrease in gingivitis and inflammation. Various brand names include the Waterpik Conair Interplak Dental Water Jet, Interplak Dental Water jet etc.
